Patterns

Geometrical patterns can be made using plane shapes such as triangles, quadrilaterals and circles.

To understand a geometrical pattern we need to study how the shapes are repeated in the pattern.

Other geometrical patterns are curved patterns made using straight lines.

Observe examples of patterns

Example

Study the pattern below and draw the next shape in the pattern.

The next shape in the pattern shows a repeat of the first shape after a rotation of 360 degrees.

solution

Points O to J on the vertical and horizontal axes on below are at equal distance from one to the next. The straight lines JA and IB have been drawn. Make a curved pattern by drawing the rest of the straight lines HC to AJ.
