Multiplication and division of fractions

Multiplication and division of fractions

Points to note

  • Multiplication of fractions involves multipling the two numerators together then then the two denominators together.

  • However, when multiplying fractions inorder to simplify do so by canceling factors common to both numerators denominators.

  • Whole numbers are multiplied with numerator only.

  • All mixed numbers are converted to improper fractions when multiplying or dividing.

  • In division of fractions, change the division signs to multiplication then change the second fraction to be its reciprocal (invert it).
