The place value guides us to read numbers and symbols.

 

EXAMPLE:

7,982,495

 

  • 7 :millions
  • 9:hundred of thousands
  • 8:tens of thousands
  • 2:thousands
  • 4:hundreds
  • 9:tens
  • 5:ones

 

Therefore the number 7,982,495 is read as seven million, nine hundred and eighty-two thousand, four hundred and ninety-five.

  • write the following numbers in figures and symbols or figures

  • Two hundred and thirty-four thousand, six hundred and fifty-seven.

  • Two million, seven hundred and eighty-nine thousand, four hundred and three.

  • Seventeen million, eight hundred and thirty-four thousand, and nine.

The commas indicate the category of numbers.Example the number768,502

starting from right 2 is ones place,0 is tens place,5 is hundreds place, the set represents ones.

The number 8 is thousands place,6 is the ten thousand place and 7 is the hundred thousand place, the set represents thousands.
