Classification of plants

Plants can be classified into two groups:

  1.  Green plants  and fungus

  2. Flowering  and  non-flowering plants

Fungus

They lack chlorophyll and are therefore not able to manufacture their own food by photosynthesis.

They instead, take-in their nutrients from dead and decaying animal or plant materials.

Examples of such plants are bread mould, mushrooms, toad stool and puffball.

Flowering or non-flowering plants

Flowering plants:

Plants that produce flowers are called flowering plants.

It is through the flowers that seeds and fruits are formed.

A plant can then germinate from the seeds or fruits.

Examples of flowering plants are maize, oranges, beans, bougainvillea and hibiscus.

Non-flowering plants

Plants that do not produce flowers are called non-flowering plants.

These plants cannot reproduce by producing seed.

Instead, the non-flowering plants reproduce through production of tiny structures called spores.

Examples of non-flowering plants are bread mould, mushrooms, algae (simple plants which make pond water green) fern and lichens.
