Postal charges

These refers to the payments made for the services offered in a post office.

In Kenya some of these services include:

  1. Postage of letters and parcels within the country and abroad.
  2. Sending money
  3. Banking
  4. Rental boxes

Postal charges

Inland postal charges

Charges paid at a post office so that letters and parcels can be sent within a country are called inland postal charges.

 

Example 1

The table provided shows inland postal charges for sending letters, aerogrammes and post cards.

Ngoko posted a letter of mass 60 g, 2 aerogrammes and a post card. What was the postal charge?

Solution

Letter of mass 60 g is charged between

50 g and 100 g which is Sh 28

2 aerogrammes are charged @ Sh 21

both will be Sh 2 X 21 = Sh 42

1 postcard is charged at Sh 19

Total charge Sh (28 + 42 + 19) = Sh 89

International postal charges

International postal charges are paid to a post office in a given country in order to send letters and parcels to other parts of the world.

 

Example

Miriam sent a small packet of mass 1.6 kg to Nigeria, printed papers of mass 240 g to Uganda and a small packet of mass 1 kg to Germany.

Work out the total postal charge.

Solution

Charges are as follows:

Sh 1.6 kg packet to Nigeria 840

240 g printed papers to Uganda 177

1 kg packet to Germany 707

Total charge = 1 724
