Circles

- A circle can be drawn using a pair of compasses.

- In the figure below O is the centre of the circle.

- r is the radius and d is the diameter (2r) ANBO is a minor sector (less than half the circle).

- AMBO is a major sector (more than half the circle).

Constructing a circle

Circle passing through vertices of a triangle (circumcircle).

Procedure

(i) Draw a triangle XYZ.

(ii) Construct the perpendicular bisectors of XY and ZY (any two sides can be used).

(iii) Mark the point O where the bisectors meet.

(iv) With centre O and radius OX draw a circle.

(v) The circle passes through the vertices X, Y, Z of triangle XYZ.

Circle touching the three sides of a triangle (inscribed-circle)

Procedure

(i) Draw a triangle XYZ.

(ii) Construct the bisectors of •ZXY and •ZYX (any two angles can be used).

(iii) Mark point O where the bisectors meet.

(iv) Construct the perpendicular bisector of XY (any side can be used) from point O to meet XY at M.

(v) with centre O and radius OM draw a circle. The circle touches the three sides of the triangle.
