  • What is division?

Division is splitting into equal parts or sharing fairly

DIVIDING 5 DIGIT NUMBER BY A 2 DIGIT NUMBER

Example; 35074 ÷ 38

____________

  38)35074

  • In this division 38 cannot divide 35 therefore, we are going to bring 0 and divide 350.
  • But how many times can 38 divide 350?

DIVIDING 5 DIGIT NUMBER BY A 2 DIGIT NUMBER

Example 35074 ÷ 38

        9

  38)35074

               -342

                    8

 Let’s try

        38

       x 5

      190          too little

  •     38

      x 9

     342           this is near 350

  • Write 9 above 0

  • Then subtract 342 from 350 and

get 8

DIVIDING A 5 DIGIT NUMBER BY A 2 DIGIT NUMBER

Example; 35074 ÷ 38

        92

  38)35074

               -342

                    87

  -76

                    11

  • Now drop 7 to make 87 and then divide by 3

  • Try 38

     X   2

        76        this is nearer 87

  • Write 2 above 7, then 2x38 = 76.
  • Write 76 below 87 and subtract

DIVIDING 5 DIGIT NUMBER BY A 2 DIGIT NUMBER

Example 35074 ÷ 38

        923

  38)35074

               -342

                    87

  -76

                    114

                   -114

                        0

  • Now drop 4 to make 114 and then divide by 38

  • Try 38

     X   3

114         this is exact as 114

  • Write 3 above 4 , then 3x38 = 114.

  • Write 114 below 114 and

Subtract to get 0

Another example 52917 ÷ 74

        715 remainder 7

  74)52917

               -518

                  111

  • Divide 529 by 74 as in the first example. It will divide 7 times.
  • 7x74 is 518. subtract 518 from 529 and get 11
  • Now drop 1 to make 111 and then divide by 74

Another example 52917 ÷ 74

        715 remainder 7

  74)52917

               -518

                  111

    -74

                    377

                   -370

                        7

  • 74 will divide 111 once 1

  • Subtract 74 from 111 to get 37

  • Now drop 7 to make 377 and then divide by 74

Another example 52917 ÷ 74

        715 remainder 7

  74)52917

               -518

                  111

    -74

                    377

                   -370

                        7

  • 74 will divide 377 five(5) times which is 370 remainder 7

summary

52917 ÷ 74

        715 remainder 7

  74)52917

               -518

                  111

    -74

                    377

                   -370

                        7

  • Divide 529 by 74 as the first example. It will divide 7 times.
  • 7x74 is 518. subtract 518 from 529 and get 11
  • Now drop 1 to make 111 and then divide by 74
  • 74 will divide 111 once (1)
  • Subtract 74 from 111 to get 37
  • Now drop 7 to make 377 and then divide by 74
  • 74 will divide 377 five times which is 370 remainder 7
  • Example 35074 ÷ 38
  •         923

  38)35074

               -342

                    87

  -76

                    114

                   -114

                        0

Another example 52917 ÷ 74

        715 remainder 7

  74)52917

               -518

                  111

  -74

                    377

                   -370

                        7

  • In the above examples 923 and 715 are quotients i.e. the answer.
  • 38 and 74 are divisors
  • in the second example there is a remainder 7
