Division involving a decimal by a whole number

What is Division ?

  • Division is one of the four basic operations in arithmetic (mathematics) apart from addition(+), subtraction (-),and multiplication (×).

Division means splitting into equal parts or groups.It's the result of fair sharing. For example:

A mother has 12 pieces of chocolate and wants to share them equally to her 3 children.

Answer:

They should get 4 each. We use the ÷ symbol, or sometimes the / symbol to mean divide:

12 ÷ 3 = 4

12 / 3 = 4

NOTE THE FOLLOWING;

In division we have;

  • Dividend which is the number to be divided by the divisor.

  • Divisor is the number we use  to divide another  Number which we call dividend.

  • The answer we get after dividing dividend by the divisor is called quotient

NOTE THE FOLLOWING;

In division we have; Dividend which is the number to be divided by the divisor.

Divisor is the number we use to divide another number which we call dividend.

The answer we get after dividing dividend by the divisor is called quotient.

For example:

If Kamau has 7.5kg of sugar to share among his 5 siblings,each sibling will get?

It would be:-

  • Multiply 5 x 1 = 5
  • Subtract 7 - 5 = 2
  • Bring down  5
  • Multiply 5 × 1 = 5
  • Subtract 25 - 25 = 0

Multiply the quotient by the divisor to get the dividend and to confirm if your answer is correct.

1.5 kg × 5

1.5 (quotient)

× 5 (divisor)

 _____________

7.5 (dividend)

Work out the following examples

Example 1.

  • Ruth has Shs. 24.50 to share between her two sons. How much will each son get?

Solution;

  • Shs.24.50 is the dividend while 2 is the divisor.

Example 2.

Divide 9.396 by 9

  • 9.396 is the dividend while 9 is the divisor.

Use long division

Remember to add zero(0) in case there is a reminder to enable you divide easily

Example 3.

5.76\8

You can also remove the decimal point by multiplying the dividend and the divisor by multiples of 10.e.g  by 10, 100, or 1000 depending on the number of decimal places in the dividend or divisor

  • 5.76 has two decimal places so we multiply by 100 to remove the decimal point.

  • Remember what is done to dividend should also be done to the divisor.

Exercise

 Work out the following

  • 2.495 divide by 5

  • 23.4 divide by 8

  • 12.72 divide by 6

  • Rose had a string of length 16.1meters long.she decided to cut it into 7 equal pieces.How long was each piece?

  • A cook had a bag of rice weighing 17.75kg. He shared the rice equally between 50 students, how much did each student get?
